- ItemContext-aware sensing of physiological signals.(2007-11-16) Wu, Winston H; Batalin, Maxim A; Au, Lawrence K; Bui, Alex A T; Kaiser, William JRecent advancement in microsensor technology permits miniaturization of conventional physiological sensors Combined with low power energy aware embedded systems and low power wireless interfaces these sensors now enable patient monitoring in home and workplace environments in addition to the clinic Low energy operation is critical for meeting typical long operating lifetime requirements Some of these physiological sensors such as electrocardiographs ECG introduce large energy demand because of the need for high sampling rate and resolution and also introduce limitations due to reduced user wearability In this paper we show how context aware sensing can provide the required monitoring capability while eliminating the need for energy intensive continuous ECG signal acquisition We have implemented a wearable system based on standard widely used handheld computing hardware components This system relies on a new software architecture and an embedded inference engine developed for these standard platforms The performance of the system is evaluated using experimental data sets acquired for subjects wearing this system during an exercise sequence This same approach can be used in context aware monitoring of diverse physiological signals in a patient s daily life
- ItemIdentification of patient name references within medical documents using semantic selectional restrictions.(2002-12-04) Taira, Ricky K; Bui, Alex A T; Kangarloo, HooshangDe identification of a patient s personal data from medical records is a protective legal requirement imposed before medical documents can be used for research purposes or transferred to other healthcare providers e g teachers students tele consultations This de identification process is tedious if performed manually and is known to be quite faulty in direct search and replace strategies 9 In this paper we report on the identification step of this process The proposed algorithm is based on estimating the fitness of candidate patient name references to a set of semantic selectional restrictions The semantic restrictions place tight contextual requirements upon candidate words in the report text and are determined automatically from a manually tagged corpus of training reports Maximum entropy classifiers are used to provide a probabilistic measure of the belief of a given candidate token to a given semantic restriction We report on the design and preliminary evaluation of the system within the do main of pediatric urology
- ItemInformatics in radiology: A prototype Web-based reporting system for onsite-offsite clinician communication.(2007-07-10) Arnold, Corey W; Bui, Alex A T; Morioka, Craig; El-Saden, Suzie; Kangarloo, HooshangThe communication of imaging findings to a referring physician is an important role of the radiologist However communication between onsite and offsite physicians is a time consuming process that can obstruct work flow and frequently involves no exchange of visual information which is especially problematic given the importance of radiologic images for diagnosis and treatment A prototype World Wide Web based image documentation and reporting system was developed for use in supporting a communication loop that is based on the concept of a classic wet read system The proposed system represents an attempt to address many of the problems seen in current communication work flows by implementing a well documented and easily accessible communication loop that is adaptable to different types of imaging study evaluation Images are displayed in a native DICOM Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine format with a Java applet which allows accurate presentation along with use of various image manipulation tools The Web based infrastructure consists of a server that stores imaging studies and reports with Web browsers that download and install necessary client software on demand Application logic consists of a set of PHP hypertext preprocessor modules that are accessible with an application programming interface The system may be adapted to any clinician specialist communication loop and because it integrates radiologic standards with Web based technologies can more effectively communicate and document imaging data
- ItemWireless data collection of self-administered surveys using tablet computers.(2011-12-23) Singleton, Kyle W; Lan, Mars; Arnold, Corey; Vahidi, Mani; Arangua, Lisa; Gelberg, Lillian; Bui, Alex A TThe accurate and expeditious collection of survey data by coordinators in the field is critical in the support of research studies Early methods that used paper documentation have slowly evolved into electronic capture systems Indeed tools such as REDCap and others illustrate this transition However many current systems are tailored web browsers running on desktop laptop computers requiring keyboard and mouse input We present a system that utilizes a touch screen interface running on a tablet PC with consideration for portability limited screen space wireless connectivity and potentially inexperienced and low literacy users The system was developed using C ASP net and SQL Server by multiple programmers over the course of a year The system was developed in coordination with UCLA Family Medicine and is currently deployed for the collection of data in a group of Los Angeles area clinics of community health centers for a study on drug addiction and intervention
