Strategic Approaches for Planning National mHealth/HIS Investments

dc.description.abstractDigital innovations have helped drive progress toward better health outcomes However a major obstacle remains decision makers at all levels of a health system still may not have the health information they need when they need it preventing them from optimally using data to take the actions their health systems require Through the Data Use Partnership DUP the Government of Tanzania and PATH as well as the Government of Malawi and Cooper Smith identified two sets of approaches and tools to assist with prioritizing digital health and mHealth investments In Tanzania The GoT and PATH identified a set of digital health investment recommendations with the highest potential value and alignment to national priorities The result was Tanzania s Digital Health Investment Road Map a first of its kind achievement in our field In Malawi to date no smart phone applications have been able to scale to a national audience and systems remain both geographically topically and technically in silos The mHealth assessment provides a concrete way for Malawi to adapt high level frameworks and tools into assessments that provide evidence for policies standards and strategies in mobile health Our novel approach considers 3 key components a national sustainable registration of projects using the WHO Digital Health Atlas an under the hood deep dive into several of the largest implementations and a user experience survey Results of each will be shared as well as lessons on the methods and approach Speakers included MODERATOR Hannah Cooper Co Founder and Managing Director Cooper Smith Breese McIlvaine Program Officer PATH Henry Mwanyika Africa Regional Director Digital Health PATH Andrea Fletcher Lead Data Strategist Cooper Smith Isaac Dambula Deputy Director of Planning MOH Malawi
