- ItemBiomedical implementation of liquid metal ink as drawable ECG electrode and skin circuit.(2013-03-08) Yu, Yang; Zhang, Jie; Liu, JingBACKGROUND Conventional ways of making bio electrodes are generally complicated expensive and unconformable Here we describe for the first time the method of applying Ga based liquid metal ink as drawable electrocardiogram ECG electrodes Such material owns unique merits in both liquid phase conformability and high electrical conductivity which provides flexible ways for making electrical circuits on skin surface and a prospective substitution of conventional rigid printed circuit boards PCBs METHODS Fundamental measurements of impedance and polarization voltage of the liquid metal ink were carried out to evaluate its basic electrical properties Conceptual experiments were performed to draw the alloy as bio electrodes to acquire ECG signals from both rabbit and human via a wireless module developed on the mobile phone Further a typical electrical circuit was drawn in the palm with the ink to demonstrate its potential of implementing more sophisticated skin circuits RESULTS With an oxide concentration of 0 34 the resistivity of the liquid metal ink was measured as 44 1 cm with quite low reactance in the form of straight line Its peak polarization voltage with the physiological saline was detected as 0 73 V The quality of ECG wave detected from the liquid metal electrodes was found as good as that of conventional electrodes from both rabbit and human experiments In addition the circuit drawn with the liquid metal ink in the palm also runs efficiently When the loop was switched on all the light emitting diodes LEDs were lit and emitted colorful lights CONCLUSIONS The liquid metal ink promises unique printable electrical properties as both bio electrodes and electrical wires The implemented ECG measurement on biological surface and the successfully run skin circuit demonstrated the conformability and attachment of the liquid metal The present method is expected to innovate future physiological measurement and biological circuit manufacturing technique in a large extent
- ItemM-HELP: a miniaturized total health examination system launched on a mobile phone platform.(2013-10-29) Yu, Yang; Li, Jingjing; Liu, JingBACKGROUND A timely health examination is of great significance for incipient disease detection and prevention However conventional examinations generally rely heavily on bulky and expensive instrumentation which is not easily available To address technical barriers an innovative highly miniaturized and integrated health examination system Mobile Health Examination Launched on the Phone M HELP was developed MATERIALS AND METHODS Based on the design of a multifunctional Android Google Mountain View CA application and the development of different wireless biomedical sensor modules a mobile phone was incorporated into a central terminal for personal health examination More than 12 parameters including electrocardiogram heart sound and eye test as well as others covered the majority of the crucial parameters in a total health examination and have been successfully established and incorporated into the system Unlike the conventional examination the M HELP system could generate electronic health records and send them to physicians via e mails or multimedia messages This significantly simplifies the general health examination with much lower cost and fewer temporal and spatial restrictions RESULTS For proof of concept a bench scale test recruiting 11 volunteer subjects showed that the average time spent on a total health examination with M HELP system was about 28 min CONCLUSIONS This article clarifies the basic concept of a total health examination on the platform of a mobile phone demonstrates the basic features of the M HELP system with group tests and suggests the practical future application of the new system and the scientific issues thus raised
- Item[Realization of mobile phone based wireless blood pressure monitoring system and its preliminary implementation].(2012-03-02) Wang, Shuo; Gong, Eenhao; Yu, Yang; Liu, JingA novel system which could measure blood pressure wirelessly through mobile phone has been proposed and developed It consisted of a blood pressure signal recorder based on MCU Micro Control Unit which could transmit measured data via Bluetooth and a software embedded on mobile phone which could calculate the value of blood pressure and the rate of heart beat The measurement results could easily be stored in text documents or in picture format Detailed scheme and design of each module in the system was illustrated and experiments were conducted to demonstrate the reliability and stability of the device A series of new conceptual explorations into blood pressure related issues were conducted with this system including the variational blood pressure at different time periods in a day the effect of posture on the measurement results and the impact of movements on blood pressure
