- ItemCurrent state and future directions of technology-based ecological momentary assessments and interventions for major depressive disorder: protocol for a systematic review.(0000-00-00) Colombo, Desirée; Palacios, Azucena Garcia; Alvarez, Javier Fernandez; Patané, Andrea; Semonella, Michelle; Cipresso, Pietro; Kwiatkowska, Marta; Riva, Giuseppe; Botella, CristinaBACKGROUND Ecological momentary assessments EMAs and ecological momentary interventions EMIs represent a novel approach for the assessment and delivery of psychological support to depressed patients in daily life Beyond the classical paper and pencil daily diaries the more recent progresses in Information and Communication Technologies ICT enabled researchers to bring all the needed processes together in only one device i e response signaling repeated symptom collection information storage secure data transfer and psychological support delivery Despite evidence showing the feasibility and acceptability of these techniques EMAs are only beginning to be applied in real clinical practice whether the development of EMIs for clinically depressed patients is still very limited The objective of this systematic review is to provide the state of the art of technology based EMAs and EMIs for major depressive disorder MDD with the aim of leading the way to possible future directions for the clinical practice METHODS We will conduct a systematic review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analysis PRISMA guidelines Data sources will include two bibliographic databases PubMed and Web of Science Web of Knowledge supplemented by searches for unpublished or ongoing studies Eligible studies will report data for adult 18 years old with a primary both current and past diagnosis of MDD defined by a valid criterion standard We will consider studies adopting technology based EMAs and EMIs for the investigation and or assessment of depression and for the delivery of a psychological intervention We will exclude studies adopting paper and pencil tools DISCUSSION The proposed systematic review will provide new insights on the advantages and benefits of adopting technology based EMAs and EMIs for MDD in the traditional clinical practice taking into consideration both clinical and technological issues The potential of using sensors and biosensors along with machine learning for affective modeling will also be discussed

- ItemInternet-based telehealth system for the treatment of agoraphobia.(2003-09-26) Alcañiz, Mariano; Botella, Cristina; Baños, Rosa; Perpiñá, Concepción; Rey, Beatriz; Lozano, José Antonio; Guillén, Verónica; Barrera, Francisco; Gil, José AntonioIn this work that is being validated within the VEPSY project we present a system that allows the patient to continue a psychological virtual reality treatment from his or her home PC as complementary therapy In the consulting room we have been using virtual therapy for panic disorder and agoraphobia treatment to expose the patient to several situations For the complementary therapy a structured treatment via the Internet has been prepared which consists of several parts an assessment protocol a structured treatment protocol organized in several blocks such as psychoeducation and exposure and an outcome protocol The same situations as in the consulting room have been selected for the exposure but each of them has been divided into several virtual environments with specific characteristics that limit its difficulty level The stimuli that are used at each level are controlled automatically by the system The information of the patient is stored in a database which is placed in a remote server using XML format and used to control which stages of the treatment he or she can access The psychologist can limit the evolution of the patient The virtual environments are installed in the patient s PC and they are implemented with a mechanism that ensures that they can only be run when the patient connects to the web The user should not have any special virtual reality hardware at home so head rotations have been simulated with the navigation system
- ItemOnline predictive tools for intervention in mental illness: the OPTIMI project.(2011-02-21) Botella, Cristina; Moragrega, Inés; Baños, R; Garcia-Palacios, AzucenaMental health care represents over a third of the cost of health care to all EU nations and in US is estimated to be around the 2 5 of the gross national product It additionally results in further costs to the economy in lost productivity Depression and Stress related disorders are the most common mental illnesses and the prevention of depression and suicide is one of the 5 central focus points in the European Pact for Mental Health and Well Being While other mental illnesses may benefit in the long term Depression and Stress will be the focal point mental illnesses mentioned in OPTIMI Currently the main treatments for mental illness are pharmacological and evidence based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy CBT CBT comprises a set of therapist and patient processes whose format allows for the whole treatment process to be computerized and personalized Computerised CBT CCBT OPTIMI will try to improve the state of the art by monitoring stress and poor coping behavior in high risk population and by developing tools to perform prediction through early identification of the onset of depression The main goal of OPTIMI is to improve CCBT programs in order to enhance both efficacy and therapeutic effectiveness The presentation will outline the main goals the project is aiming and its clinical rationale
- ItemPersonal health systems for mental health: the European projects.(2011-02-21) Riva, Giuseppe; Baños, Rosa; Botella, Cristina; Gaggioli, Andrea; Wiederhold, Brenda KSince the European funded project VREPAR Virtual Reality in Neuro Psycho Physiology 1995 different European research activities have been using virtual reality and advanced information and communication technologies to improve the quality of care in the treatment of many different mental health disorders including anxiety disorders eating disorders and obesity Now the European Commission funding is shifting from the traditional hospital centred and reactive healthcare delivery model toward a person centred and preventive one The main outcome of this shift is the Personal Health Systems PHS paradigm that aims at offering continuous quality controlled and personalized health services to empowered individuals regardless of location The paper introduces four recently funded projects Interstress Monarca Optimi and Psyche that aim at using PHS based on virtual reality biosensors and or mobile technologies to improve the treatment of bipolar disorders depression and psychological stress
